Baptist Commentaries: 100 Well-Reviewed Volumes

Baptist commentaries are the work of scholars and pastors who have served and ministered within the Baptist branch of the Christian faith. The volumes below reflect Baptist beliefs and convictions, yet non-Baptists read many of these well-reviewed volumes as well.

The Baptist tradition is one of the most diverse in Protestant Christianity. It doesn’t have a single unifying creed or beliefs statement, and the tradition’s commitment to the independence of the each local church sometimes results in a wide-range of beliefs and practices.

Despite this diversity, there remains common ground upon the primary matters of the faith, and on many secondary matters as well, among Baptist churches that remain committed to orthodoxy and haven’t adopted more liberal and progressive positions. These commonalities, which can be found in the pages of Baptist commentaries, include:

  • the inspiration and authority of Scripture
  • the deity of Christ, his death as an atonement for sin, and his bodily resurrection from the dead
  • salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone
  • two ordinances: full-immersion believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Supper
  • the independence of the local church and congregational government
  • the separation of church and state
  • Baptists can be Arminian or Calvinist, premillennial or amillennial
